Semen Cryopreservation/Sperm Banking
Semen Cryopreservation
Procedure
Semen samples are collected , processed and cryoprotectants added.
Then it is frozen in a liquid nitrogen chamber at -180 degree centigrade.
Who needs it?
- Husband not staying together can freeze a few samples and wife can continue treatment by either IUI/ IVF.
- All the couples undergoing IVF, 1-2 samples of husband semen are frozen prior to the actual procedure as safety. Sometimes the male partner may not be able to give a sample on D-day due to anxiety.
- Males undergoing cancer treatments can freeze a few samples before starting cancer treatments like chemotherapy, radiation therapy or surgery.
Sperm Banking
There are many males who suffer from Complete Azoospermia or severe Oligo astheno spermia. All of them may not be able to afford ICSI and/or TESE/MESE.
So we have semen bank wherein we have frozen semen samples of donors.
These donors undergo basic blood tests to rule out diabetes, HIV, Hepatitis etc.
Donor's Blood group, Height, Colour of skin, Colour of hair, and Colour of eye. These 5 criterias are mentioned on the sample for appropriate matching. Otherwise the donor remains unknown.
IUI is done using these samples.
Proper consent of both partners is necessary before undergoing Donor IUI.
